Minnesota hospital to install ‘oasis-type’ rooms

Wellness Environments products will create soothing, tranquil patient areas

NASHVILLE, Tenn., October 4, 2006 – Madelia Community Hospital’s focus on patient comfort has resulted in the facility selecting Wellness Environments products for eight “oasis-type” patient rooms to be created as part of a major expansion project. Four of the rooms, including one bariatric room, will be private and four will be semi-private areas.

“No one wants to spend time in the hospital but if you have to, it should be in an ‘oasis-type’ environment,” said Candace Fenske, Madelia Community Hospital Administrator. “We chose Wellness Environments because they will provide our patients with a room that focuses on healing amidst a tranquil, soothing environment.”

Wellness Environments’ rooms are designed to help patients heal more quickly through, among other things, the use of soft lighting, nature scenes and rounded corners to reduce the risk of injury. As a result, all eight rooms at Madelia will include backlit nature scenes on the wall as well as in the overbed canopy.  The room design ensures a gentle airflow throughout the room without blowing directly on patients. Patients will have the ease and convenience of controlling lighting and window shades through a pillow switch, an important feature for less mobile patients.

Madelia’s patient rooms will also be extremely long lasting. The Wellcare™ Wall System features vinyl panels, resulting in a surface that doesn’t easily tear and reduces scuffing. An extra benefit of the Wellcare™ walls will be the ability to quickly and easily remove individual panels for electrical or plumbing maintenance, or to introduce new technology into the space. The walls also feature radius corners, which will make easier cleaning and thus a more sanitary environment.

The in-room Nurse Station is a compact unit that places frequently used supplies in a compact space along with  an area for hand washing. The Clinical Information Center lowers the risk of bedside errors by allowing in-room charting and a lockable storage area.  These features will enhance the quality of care the patient receives in addition to efficiency.

Other Wellness Environments products that will be incorporated into the project are:§

§         Private ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) bathrooms featuring a 48-inch vanity and a spacious 36x36-inch shower;

§         Overbed and bedside tables;

§         Sleeper sofas, side chairs and recliners to give family members and visitors comfortable seating;

§         Ventura armoires for personal storage and to house a flat-screen TV; and

§         Vertical headwalls with 16 emergency power outlets for medical air, vacuum and oxygen, as well as normal power outlets, data outlets and a telephone outlet.

“We strive to offer our patients and staff the very best healthcare environment,” Fenske said, “and Wellness Environments’ products are the best solution for our patients, staff and community. We can’t wait to unveil our Wellness rooms to the Madelia community.”
